Version 0 of 1.

Five Americans and two Peruvians were killed Monday when the helicopter they were in crashed in the jungle near Pucallpa, in the central part of the country, soon after takeoff. The victims were employees of Columbia Helicopters, an Oregon-based company that operated the cargo helicopter, a two-rotor Boeing Model 234 Chinook. They were on their way to deliver materials to an oil exploration site, the company said. There was no immediate indication of what caused the crash, which is being investigated by Peruvian transportation officials. Witnesses told local news media that the helicopter appeared to have exploded after hitting the ground. Photographs showed the aircraft’s charred and flattened remains in a marshy area. The company said the Americans on board were from Washington, Florida, Utah, Tennessee and Oregon.
