Residents have been evacuated from a block of tenement flats in the west end of Glasgow after a blaze broke out on the first floor.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service said they were called out to the four-storey building on Dowanhill Street at about 04:30.

Firefighters with breathing apparatus entered the flats to take people to safety and begin tackling the blaze.

There are no reports of any injuries and the cause of the fire is not known.

A fire service spokesman said: "At present the firefighting operations now mainly consist of stripping down damaged material to check for any signs of fire spread and ensure all pockets of fire are extinguished."
