Police are investigating the "sudden and unexpected" death of a four-month-old girl in the south Wales valleys.

The child died in Cardiff's University Hospital of Wales on New Year's Eve after being taken to hospital the night before from her home in Pontypridd.

South Wales Police said a man and a woman were helping officers with their enquiries.

Police said that no arrests had been made and the investigation was at an early stage.

The baby was initially taken from her home to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant, at 23:00 GMT on Sunday before she was transferred to Cardiff.
