Air crash reported near army base Casualties in military air crash
(20 minutes later)
A rescue operation has been launched after reports of an army helicopter crash in North Yorkshire, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said. At least eight people have been taken to hospital after a military helicopter crash in North Yorkshire.
The helicopter is believed to have crashed near the Catterick Garrison army base. Five casualties were taken to hospital in Middlesbrough by RAF helicopters, with two more to follow, a Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokeswoman said.
An MoD spokeswoman said two rescue helicopters and a team trained in mountain rescue techniques had been dispatched to the area. An eighth person was taken to the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton, by road ambulance, she said, adding that more people could be taken to hospital.
The operation was "at a very early stage", the spokeswoman added. The crash is thought to have occurred west of Catterick Garrison army base.
Casualties have been to the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough.
The spokeswoman said two more people would be transferred there by RAF Sea King helicopter.
She said the ambulance service had been called just before 2100 BST.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said the site of the crash was a wooded area, which had now been cordoned off, to the west of Catterick Garrison.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews were at the crash scene.
