Officers are still clearing up at the scene and some tailbacks are reported. The recovery operation was complicated as the vehicles were "stuck together".
A spokeswoman for Highways Agency said: "The impact of the crash stuck the HGVs together, so it made recovery difficult."
Officers from Metropolitan Police and Essex Police attended the accident scene.
