South Sudan: Army Shoots Down U.N. Helicopter
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/22/world/africa/south-sudans-army-shoots-down-un-helicopter.html Version 0 of 1. South Sudan’s Army shot down a United Nations peacekeeping helicopter on Friday, killing the four Russian crew members on board, United Nations and military officials said. A United Nations official said the helicopter was on a reconnaissance mission in an area where South Sudan’s Army has been fighting rebel militias. Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations secretary general, strongly condemned the attack on the “clearly marked” helicopter. South Sudan’s Army first denied that it had shot down the Russian helicopter but later said that it had mistaken it for a Sudanese plane supplying rebels in Jonglei State. “We regret the incident,” said an army spokesman, Col. Philip Aguer. |
