The Hague: Congolese Ex-Militia Leader Is Released
Version 0 of 1. A former Congolese militia leader was released from prison on Friday, hours after judges turned down a bid from the prosecution to keep him behind bars pending appeal. This week, judges at the International Criminal Court in The Hague acquitted the former militia leader, Mathieu Ngudjolo, 42, of crimes against humanity and war crimes. They found that prosecutors had failed to prove his commanding role during a 2003 attack on the village of Bogoro, where militia fighters raped many and killed 200 villagers. Mr. Ngudjolo must now wait in the Netherlands until the United Nations formally lifts his travel ban. He has served almost five years in the court’s prison. |
