India's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party is leading in Gujarat, as votes in state polls were counted. Hindu nationalist leader Narendra Modi looks set to win a fourth successive term as chief minister of India's Gujarat state, early election results suggest.

In Gujarat the polls are seen as a referendum on the popularity of the BJP's Narendra Modi, who has ruled the western state since October 2001. The rival Congress party was leading in 58 seats, it said.
However, the Congress appears set to win in the state of Himachal Pradesh.
The party has won 14 seats and is leading in 22 of 68 seats in the state. The BJP has won seven and is leading in 19 seats.
