She told the Evening Post her husband had been hit and he fell onto his back and hit his head on the road, leaving him bleeding and unconscious. She said there had been several incidents in their street in the last year or so with youths damaging cars, throwing stones at windows and generally causing a late night nuisance.
Mrs Matthews said her husband had had two brain scans and doctors were monitoring a blood clot on his brain. Her husband went out with nothing on his feet and was bare-chested, where a number of youngsters were "scattered about".
South Wales Police confirmed they were called to Cae Cerrig Road early on Saturday after reports of anti-social behaviour. Mrs Matthews said her husband had been hit, he fell onto his back and hit his head on the road, leaving him bleeding and unconscious.
The force confirmed a man was taken to hospital and four youths arrested and questioned, who have been released on police bail pending further inquiries. Her husband had had two brain scans and doctors were monitoring a blood clot on his brain.
He has been seen by a neurosurgeon, and she said he was hopeful he would not have to operate, but he was being monitored very closely.
Mrs Matthews said: "We're in limbo. We've been told that he's not out of the woods yet.
"I think it's rocked the whole community. The support that we've had had been fantastic and that is what has been keeping us going."

She said her husband, who worked at Swansea University, was very well known in the community and was involved with Neighbourhood Watch.
"Peter is not a nasty person," she said. "He is very well respected but we keep ourselves to ourselves."
Insp Keith Morgan said four youths, including one girl, were arrested and released on police bail.
"The victim was involved in an incident with youths outside his home on Saturday morning," he added.
"He is no longer in intensive care and remains in a stable condition at Morriston Hospital.
"This was a serious incident and we would appeal for anyone who saw what happened or has any information to come forward."
