The Ukrainian journalist Anhar Kochneva was kidnapped by Syrian rebels in October. Her kidnappers, allegedly members of the Free Syrian Army, have threatened to kill her today if their demand for $50m is not paid. The Free Syrian Army and the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, to which it has links, must ensure Anhar Kochneva is not harmed and released immediately in full compliance with international humanitarian laws that protect journalists working in situations of conflict.The Ukrainian journalist Anhar Kochneva was kidnapped by Syrian rebels in October. The Free Syrian Army and the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, to which it has links, must ensure Anhar Kochneva is not harmed and released immediately in full compliance with international humanitarian laws that protect journalists working in situations of conflict.
The British, French and US governments as well as with the European Union have all recognised the recently formed National Coalition as the legitimate representatives of the Syrian people. In doing so, they too bear responsibility to impress upon the coalition the importance of respecting human rights and condemning violations. Article 19, Reporters Without Borders, the International Press Institute and the Committee to Protect Journalists, have written directly to these governments, as well as representatives of the EU, asking that they urgently push the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Free Syrian Army to prevent the murder of Kochneva and facilitate her release.The British, French and US governments as well as with the European Union have all recognised the recently formed National Coalition as the legitimate representatives of the Syrian people. The Committee to Protect Journalists considers Syria the deadliest country for journalists in 2012, with 24 journalists killed since the conflict began in March 2011.
