France: Two Suspects Detained in Toulouse Killings

The police detained a man and a woman in southern France on Tuesday on suspicion of abetting the killing of seven people in Toulouse last March, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office. Investigators believe that the man may have been involved in providing firearms to the gunman, Mohammed Merah, according to the prosecutor’s spokeswoman, Agnès Thibault-Lecuivre. The man is also suspected of participating in the theft of the stolen motor scooter Mr. Merah used in the killings, she said, while the woman was detained because she was the man’s former partner. No charges had been filed against either. The authorities initially described Mr. Merah, a 23-year-old French-Algerian who was killed in a standoff with the police, as a “lone wolf” who acted without assistance. But his elder brother was arrested in March on murder and terrorism charges and remains in custody. |
