A British holidaymaker has been given a suspended six-month jail sentence in connection with the death of a teenage motorcyclist in Cyprus.

James Goodwin, 22, from Essex, was one of four British men charged over the death of moped rider Christos Papiris.

The 17-year-old died after a crash near the resort of Ayia Napa on 18 August.

Three other men are accused of killing the teenager by driving a car at him. Goodwin admitted a charge of conspiracy after the commission of a crime.

Prosecutors believed he co-operated with the other men after the teenager's death. He was also accused of possessing a knife.

Higher court

A second teenager on the motorcycle, Marios Demetriou, 18, was seriously hurt, Cypriot police said.

Goodwin appeared at Famagusta District Court in Larnaca on Wednesday, for the second time in two days, to hear his sentence.

Cyprus Police spokeswoman Chrystalla Demetriou said: "The court decided a sentence of six months in prison suspended for three years."

His three co-defendants - Julian Harrington, 38, Luke Atkinson, 22, and Michael Binnington, 21, who are also all from Essex - are due to appear at a higher court on September 28.

They face charges of homicide, attempted homicide and conspiracy.
