Version 0 of 1.

A mental health nurse who said "so what" when a patient hit her head has been struck off.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) heard Oluwole Oyenuga had worked on Rochford Hospital's Maple Ward.

Over two night shifts in 2009, he fell asleep on duty, locked patients in rooms and refused to change a patient's incontinence pad.

The NMC said if Oyenuga continued to work as a nurse, patients would be at risk of harm.

Oyenuga, dismissed by the hospital in 2010, has been struck off the nursing register after the NMC described him as "careless, insensitive and selfish in discharging (his) duties".

Jean Bomford, a support worker on the Maple Ward, told the panel how she responded to a call light one night and went to the male part of the ward supervised by Oyenuga.

'Urine soaked'

She found a scene of "chaos with furniture disturbed in one patient's room, other patients wandering between bedrooms and patients sleeping in inappropriate places", the panel heard.

Ms Bomford also told the panel how on another occasion she found a patient "sitting in urine soaked clothing on a urine soaked bed".

She said Oyenuga refused to change the incontinence pad at the time.

Describing the occasion when a patient had hit her head, Ms Bomford said: "I told Mr Oyenuga about the lady who had said she had hit her head and he said 'so what'."

Oyenuga admitted making "some serious errors of judgment".
