Det Insp Amber Waywell, of GMP, said their thoughts and sympathies were with the boy's family and they were appealing for witnesses. A man who lives close to the scene and witnessed the aftermath said people tried to help the teenager, who had been with friends.
"Understandably, the family are absolutely distraught and both want and deserve answers as to what exactly happened last night. He said: "As I was coming back home, he was already on the floor and there were two people offering first aid.
"One was a neighbour, a nurse who lives further up the hill, and one was a guy who was driving past. It was heartbreaking to watch."
