Scottish singer Emeli Sandé was the big winner at the 17th Music of Black Origin awards, which have taken place in Liverpool. The 25-year-old singer, whose hits include the No 1 single Read All About It, won best female, best R&B/soul act and best album, beating Rita Ora and Jessie J. Plan B picked up best male act and best hip hop/grime act for his album Ill Manors, while Nigerian Afrobeats star D'Banj won best African act following the success of his single Oliver Twist this summer.

The event was hosted by the actor Adam Deacon and former T4 presenter Miquita Oliver, and saw performances from boy band JLS, Stooshe and former X Factor contestant Misha B.

Mobo founder Kanya King MBE said: "Each year we're staggered by the calibre of the talent on display at the Mobo Awards. This year has been outstanding and we're honoured to showcase the best of the best on the night."

Earlier in the year Sandé, who has a Zambian father and an English mother, wowed audiences with her performances at the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, and her debut album Our Version of Events sold more than 110,000 copies.
