Derry city council is to receive £500,000 of funding for a programme of environmental improvements. More than half a million pounds is to be invested in Londonderry to tackle dereliction in the run up to 2013.
Environment minister Alex Attwood is in the city on Tuesday to announce the details of how the money will be spent. The money, from the department of the environment, is for several projects including tidying the former Tillie and Henderson site.
It will also be used to tackle derelict buildings in the lead-up to the city's period as the UK City of Culture. Environmental works will also be carried out at the roundabout junction at Strand Road and Queen's Quay.
The Managing Director of Derry's Inner City Trust, Helen Quigley, said it was a great news story for the city. The environment minister Alex Attwood said the work would benefit tourism and boost the local economy.
