Their wedding in 1947 was a highlight for many people during the austere aftermath of the World War II.
The Queen will be the first reigning sovereign to celebrate the milestone, said Buckingham Palace.
Bridal gown | |
More than 2,000 guests packed the Abbey and thousands filled the streets to watch the carriage procession 60 years ago.
The outfits from the royal wedding are being put on display
The Queen wore an ivory silk Norman Hartnell bridal gown, decorated with 10,000 seed pearls, glittering crystals and featuring an intricate 13ft star-patterned train.
The dress forms part of a new exhibition starting on Saturday at Buckingham Palace as part of the celebrations.
It is being held in the Ball Supper Room at the palace where the wedding breakfast was held, attended by 146 guests, including kings from Romania, Denmark and Norway. | It is being held in the Ball Supper Room at the palace where the wedding breakfast was held, attended by 146 guests, including kings from Romania, Denmark and Norway. |
'Extraordinary memories'
Sir Hugh Roberts, director of the Royal Collection, gave the Queen a private tour of the exhibition.
He said: "The Queen has always been interested to see what we put on in summer exhibitions here.
"This one is very personal to her and must bring back many extraordinary memories of that day 60 years ago.
"As with everybody really seeing the dress again, she will have marvelled at the marvellous quality of the embroidery, and the marvellous way the dress was so particularly well suited to that great occasion."
Other exhibits include the groom's Royal Navy lieutenant outfit and many of the gifts the couple received. |
