A Palestinian militant group says three of its men have been killed in an Israeli air strike in the Gaza Strip.

At least one of those killed was said to be a senior commander of the group, Islamic Jihad. Israel confirmed it had carried out an air attack.

Medical officials also said Israeli troops killed a gunman from Hamas during incursion in southern Gaza.

The Israeli army said the man had been attacked after he was spotted near the troops with a rocket-propelled grenade.

Hamas said the man killed was a member of its military wing, who had been involved in confronting the Israeli incursion.

The Islamic Jihad commander was named as Omar Khatib. He reportedly survived an Israeli attack on Tuesday by jumping out of his car as an Israeli aircraft flew overhead.

A fifth Palestinian man was killed at an Israeli military checkpoint in the West Bank after a soldier struck him with a baton.

An Israeli official said he had threatened the soldiers with a knife and scuffled with the troops. The man's family said he had been mentally ill.
