A British tourist has been killed in a road crash in eastern Egypt, the Foreign Office has said.

The woman, who was of Pakistani origin, died when the bus she was travelling in crashed east of Cairo, according to Egyptian police.

The bus crashed after a front tyre blew out. Two Pakistanis were also injured in the accident.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said full consular support was being given to the woman's family.

No further details about the victim's identity have been made available.

"We are aware of the death of a British national on 6 September in a car accident on the Suez highway in Egypt," the spokeswoman said.

Eight killed

Also on Wednesday, another eight people were killed and a further 42 injured in a separate accident on the same road involving a bus carrying Egyptian pilgrims, which overturned.

The vehicle, which was heading to Saudi Arabia through the eastern Egyptian port of Suez, overturned at the town of Zaafarana due to high speed, a police official said.

The injured in both accidents were taken to nearby hospitals.

Egypt has one the highest traffic accident rates in the world.

Police say about 6,000 Egyptians die in road accidents each year.
