French police officers will once again be required to wear numbered badges on their uniforms so they can be identified in cases of accusations of abuse, according to Interior Minister Manuel Valls, whose tough talk on crime has made him popular. Although racial profiling is illegal in France, a 2009 study by the Open Society Justice Initiative found that an Arab was 7.5 times as likely to be stopped by the police as a white person; a black was six times as likely.
