US President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney are clashing over their economic proposals in the first of three presidential debates. US President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney have clashed sharply over their economic plans in the first of three televised debates.
In the opening exchanges, Mr Romney repeatedly denied that he planned a $5tn tax cut. Over 90 minutes, the men jousted over their positions on taxes, healthcare reform and the role of government.
He accused Mr Obama of planning to raise taxes on small businesses, while the president said his rival's plan repeated disastrous Bush-era policies. Mr Romney said his rival favoured "trickle-down government" while the president said Mr Romney would "double down" on Bush-era economic policies.

'Trickle-down government' The debate was seen as one of the last chances for Mr Romney to regain momentum after a series of tough weeks on the campaign trail.
In a wide-ranging debate about the economy, Mr Obama criticised Mr Romney's plans as "top-down economics".
Mr Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, characterised Mr Obama's approach as "trickle-down government".
"The president has a view very similar to the one he had when he ran for office four years ago, that spending more, taxing more, regulating more - if you will, trickle-down government - would work," Mr Romney said."The president has a view very similar to the one he had when he ran for office four years ago, that spending more, taxing more, regulating more - if you will, trickle-down government - would work," Mr Romney said.

They took the stage in Denver for a 90-minute face-off divided into six 15-minute segments. Moderator Jim Lehrer of US public broadcaster PBS has said the economy will dominate the night, with the role of government and the prospect of governing also up for discussion.
A large national audience is expected for this first debate: the opening head-to-head of the 2008 election attracted more than 50 million television viewers across the US.
The candidates' body language will be heavily scrutinised, as will their tone of voice and how they handle themselves under pressure. Media pundits and campaign spin doctors will seize on any gaffe or mis-statement in an effort to claim victory.
Both candidates' messages are well-honed, and their sharp words for each other are familiar to millions of swing-state voters who have faced an onslaught of mostly negative TV advertisements in recent months.
