Bill Moggridge, who has died aged 69 of cancer, designed the world's first laptop, the Grid Compass. When the Grid finally went on sale in 1982, it cost a minimum of $8,000. Early customers were limited mainly to military users, who valued its robust body and stubby keys. One Grid went into orbit aboard the space shuttle in 1985. The screen was relatively tiny, 320 x 240 pixels. It weighed 5kg and its memory was just short of amnesiac at 340kb.
