Gas tanker crashes in market town Tanker crashes on to railway line
(about 1 hour later)
An exclusion zone is being set up in a County Durham town after a gas tanker came off the road. A gas tanker has crashed over a bridge and plunged 50ft on to a railway near a market town in County Durham.
The tanker failed to negotiate a bend, struck a bridge over the Weardale Railway and came to rest on the track in Wolsingham. An exclusion zone has been set up and the driver was airlifted to hospital after the crash at the Weardale Railway just outside Wolsingham.
The driver of the tanker has been taken to hospital by air ambulance. Police officers, fire crews and the ambulance service are at the crash scene. Potentially flammable gas is reported to be leaking from the tanker and a 100m cordon is in place. A few homes and a caravan park were evacuated.
The A689 through the town has been closed and diversions are in place. The driver was thrown from the tanker - the extent of his injuries is unclear.
In May, a van containing gas cylinders exploded in the market place, killing the driver and causing widespread damage to both residential and commercial properties. Police and fire crews are at the scene and the A689 has been closed.
