We are about to enjoy a display of skill and fortitude at the Paralympic Games which comes specially close to the Olympic ideal and is largely free from the less appealing sides of competitive sport. We are about to enjoy a display of skill and fortitude at the Paralympic Games which comes specially close to the Olympic ideal and is largely free from the less appealing sides of competitive sport.
But there must have been moments, even for Paralympians, when the immediate aftermath of disabling injury or a hopefully rare encounter with discrimination has made their landscape seem bleak. But there must have been moments, even for Paralympians, when the immediate aftermath of disabling injury or a hopefully rare encounter with discrimination has made their landscape seem bleak.
Appropriate then, that the games' equivalent of the Olympic Torch relay, the English Flame, is start life on that vast and monotonous pile of stones, Scafell Pike. It is the highest place in England and in clear weather has wonderful views, but very few people have ever waxed lyrical about the actual mountain top.Appropriate then, that the games' equivalent of the Olympic Torch relay, the English Flame, is start life on that vast and monotonous pile of stones, Scafell Pike. Appropriately too, the flame is to be created this coming Wednesday 22 August by a party of Scouts, disabled as well as non-disabled, using the character-forming method of rubbing flints together to make a spark. I speak from experience when I say that this can be even more trying than whirling a sharpened stick between your hands until it draws first smoke, and then a flame from a dip in a second piece of wood.Appropriately too, the flame is to be created this coming Wednesday 22 August by a party of Scouts, disabled as well as non-disabled, using the character-forming method of rubbing flints together to make a spark. It will be done, however, along with similar ceremonies on Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa, Ben Nevis and Slieve Donard, before the flames make their way to London for a reception ceremony in Trafalgar Square on Friday 24 August. Then they return to 33 venues across the UK for celebration events over August Bank Holiday weekend which will highlight the challenges and rewards of disabled sports, before heading back to Stoke Mandeville hospital, where the Paralympics began, and then to London and the opening of the Games. It will be done, however, along with similar ceremonies on Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa, Ben Nevis and Slieve Donard, before the flames make their way to London for a reception ceremony in Trafalgar Square on Friday 24 August.
