Shrien Dewani extradition hearing date set

Version 0 of 1. Proceedings to extradite Shrien Dewani to South Africa, where he is accused of the murder of his wife while on honeymoon, will resume on 31 July. A spokesman from the Judiciary of England and Wales said the case would be heard at Westminster Magistrates' Court. Mr Dewani, 32, is accused of ordering the murder of his wife Anni in Cape Town in November 2010. The care home owner from Bristol denies any involvement in the killing. He has been diagnosed as suffering from severe post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. In August 2011, a judge sitting in London ruled that he could be extradited to South Africa to stand trial. Taxi hijacked But that decision was reversed on mental health grounds at the High Court in March, meaning the process will begin again. Mrs Dewani, 28, from Sweden, was shot when a taxi in which the couple were travelling was hijacked in the Gugulethu township. Taxi driver Zola Tongo, from Bothasig, Cape Town, has been jailed for 18 years for murder, kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances and perverting the course of justice. He claims he was hired by Mr Dewani to arrange his wife's execution during a fake car-jacking. Mr Dewani's co-accused Xolile Mngeni and Mziwamadoda Qwabe are due go on trial on 30 July at the Western Cape High Court in South Africa. Mr Mngeni and Mr Qwabe face charges of kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder and two counts relating to the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. Mr Dewani faces charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and obstructing the administration of justice. |
