Blast rocks Yemeni tourist site 'Tourists killed' in Yemen blast
(30 minutes later)
Several people have been wounded after an explosion hit a historical site popular with tourists in the Yemen, according to reports. At least seven people have been killed in an explosion at a tourist site in Yemen, according to reports.
The blast occurred in the eastern province of Marib on Monday, provincial officials and witnesses said. Local security officials said six Spanish tourists and at least one Yemeni died in the blast at an ancient temple complex in Mareb, eastern Yemen.
One witness said some people had been killed in the explosion, according to reports from the scene. About seven others were injured, reports said, in what officials said was a car bomb attack.
It was not immediately clear what caused the blast, but one provincial official said it could be a bombing. Witnesses reported seeing a vehicle enter a gate at the temple's site before exploding.
Yemen has faced continuing unrest often blamed on al-Qaeda operatives in recent years.
The Middle Eastern country's government has been fighting Islamists with the help of US special forces based in Djibouti, on the Horn of Africa.
