Air travel advice after attacks No 'specific terror threat' to NI
(about 7 hours later)
Belfast's two airports have issued advice to passengers in the wake of the weekend terror attack in Glasgow. There is no specific intelligence about a terrorist threat to Northern Ireland, Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde has said.
Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK are on critical terror alert after three attacks in London and Scotland.
"We have increased our security profile at airports, ports, places where lots of people gather. "But is there any specific intelligence about Northern Ireland? The answer is no," Sir Hugh said after talks with NI Secretary Shaun Woodward.
"This is a threat that affects the whole of the UK - it really does matter that the public are vigilant."
Mr Woodward said: "It is ironic that on the first day of my being in Northern Ireland there is a critical threat.
"This critical threat is from a group of extremists who have nothing to do with Northern Ireland.
"They pose a threat to the people of Northern Ireland in a way that is totally different."
