Services from Liverpool's John Lennon Airport have returned to normal after a security alert led to its closure.

Merseyside police removed a vehicle for examination following an incident on Saturday night.

The airport was closed for more than eight hours leaving hundreds of passengers stranded. It was reopened in the early hours of Sunday.

Departing flights have returned to normal, although some incoming flights are cancelled.

The alert came hours after a burning car was driven into Glasgow Airport.

Those at Liverpool when the closure came into place were taken to local leisure centres.

Salvation Army volunteers provided blankets and refreshments, but many people were picked up by relatives or found a hotel room for the night.

Extra police have been drafted in to the airport, in line with increased security at other airports across the UK, Robin Tudor, airport spokesman said.

The first wave of early morning flights by Easyjet and Ryanair - the two biggest operators out of Liverpool - were cancelled.

But by lunchtime, normal timetables were being followed.

Mr Tudor said: "The incoming cancelled flights were those whose outgoing journeys from Liverpool were cancelled last night.

"It's business as usual."
