An investigation is under way into the death of man after he was arrested by police in Lancashire.

Officers were called to reports of a man damaging cars in Brierfield in Nelson on Saturday morning.

A police spokeswoman said the man was arrested after a "violent struggle" with officers.

He was taken to Burnley police station, but later became ill and died in hospital. The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating.

Post-mortem examination

Several calls were made to police by members of the public about a man vandalising cars on Halifax Road, shortly before 0900 BST.

The spokeswoman said that after the struggle with police officers the man "became unwell".

He was pronounced dead at 1030 BST, she added.

A post mortem examination is due to take place on Sunday to establish the cause of death.
