Fourteen people have been airlifted from their stricken yacht after it overturned off the Isle of Wight.

Solent Coastguard received a Mayday on Saturday afternoon from the skipper of the 45ft yacht Bounder to say the crew were clinging to the upturned vessel.

The sailors were all wearing lifejackets but the yacht had broken its keel and was slowly sinking several miles off St Catherines Point.

The coastguard helicopter winched all 14 off the vessel before it sank.

A coastguard spokeswoman said: "After consultation with the casualties it was deemed that no medical attention was required.

"They were taken back to the helicopter base at Lee and given hot drinks.

"The crew of the yacht had been hanging onto the hull for approximately 30 minutes and were very cold but not hypothermic."
