A police officer was hit with a brick by a gang of youths after stopping their car in Lancashire.

The sergeant, who was driving home from a shift in the early hours of Saturday, stopped the car in the Brierfield area of Nelson.

Lancashire Police said some youths got out of a car and attacked the officer, hitting him with a brick and knocking him unconscious.

Three people have been arrested and are being questioned by police.

The officer was taken to hospital, but his injuries are not thought to be serious.

A Lancashire police spokesman said the officer spotted the car being driven erratically on Clitheroe Road as he drove home from work at about 0345 BST.
