Jamaica is the latest stop on Prince Harry's journey as a developing royal. The guard of honour and the gun salute he received at the airport are still novel experiences for him. One day they'll be commonplace. This was a light hearted encounter which played to Prince Harry's strengths. It was a clash of unequals, but a meeting of two performers.
He's visiting the island when the talk, in political circles at least, is of replacing the Queen with a home grown head of state. Harry, once a potential liability, is, for now, an obvious asset to an institution which withers if ignored.
In a BBC interview the prime minister, Portia Simpson Miller, said it was time for her nation to take "full charge of our destiny". "I think it's time for us to achieve full independence." With his brother William, Diana's younger son represents the future. They appear comfortable in their own skins. It's hard to imagine their father, Prince Charles owning a pair of trainers - let alone wearing them.
It's a proposed change which has been around for some time. Yet, however successful this trip might prove to be - and Harry tends to charm those he meets - it won't change the fundamentals of what may come to pass here.
The parlous state of the island's economy is a more pressing problem. Jamaica's prime minister talks of the Caribbean island being on a long journey from slavery at the hands of the British to now, finally, one day possibly soon, removing the queen and becoming a republic.
But Prince Harry's visit could prove to be historic. It might be the last by a representative of Jamaica's queen.
