We need to speak to anyone who was in Saughton Road North at about 1525 BST on Thursday and saw the incident Lothian and Borders PoliceSpokesman The first man being sought by police is described as white, 20 to 25 years old, of a skinny build and between 5ft 6in and 5ft 8in tall.
A spokesman appealed for witnesses to the incident, which happened near an RS McColl newsagents. He has short mousey brown/dirty blond hair, brushed forward at the front and down at the sides, slightly prominent ears, drawn-in cheeks, a pale complexion and a slightly pointed nose.
"We need to speak to anyone who was in Saughton Road North at about 1525 BST on Thursday and saw the incident," he said. He was clean shaven, wearing a beige long-sleeved open-necked collared shirt and plain straight-legged beige casual trousers.
"We also want to hear from anyone who may have seen the car being abandoned in the prison car park to come forward." The second man is white, 25 to 30 years old, about 6ft tall and of a medium build.
Traffic diversions were put in place on the road while officers continued their investigation. He has a "full but not fat" face with a pale complexion and short black brushed-back hair which was shorter at the sides and longer on top.
Anyone with any information about the incident was asked to contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131. He was dressed all in black with a wool style overcoat, black trousers and possibly black footwear.
The third man is white, 20 to 25 years old, 5ft 6in to 8in tall with a skinny build. He was wearing blue stonewashed jeans and a sky blue top.

Ch Insp Euan Morrison of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "We hope someone will remember these three men who were last seen near the Shell petrol station in Stenhouse Mill Wynd near the prison.
"They all went their separate ways so it is possible people might have just seen one of them.
"This was a callous act with which has left a young boy dead. We have more than 50 officers and staff working on the enquiry and will do everything in our power to bring these culprits to justice.
"Anyone who witnessed the crash and has not yet come forward or knows anything about what happened should contact police immediately."
