Lothian and Borders Police said the woman was believed to be in her 30s and the child about five years old. Lothian and Borders Police said a 31-year-old woman and her five-year-old son were found in a house in the Parkhead Grove area of Sighthill at about 5pm on Tuesday.
The emergency services were called to a house in the Parkhead Grove area of Sighthill - in the west of Edinburgh - late on Tuesday afternoon. Police have not identified the woman and child but they were named locally as Michelle Steven and her son Leon.
Officers said their investigations were at early stage and they were unable to indicate how the two people had died. A police spokesman said it appeared to be "a very tragic set of circumstances".
He said: "Our inquiries are at a very early stage and centre on their movements yesterday and how they died."
Post-mortem examinations will be carried out to determine the causes of their deaths.
