Forced inland At 630 miles, the South West Coast Path is the longest national trail in Britain, running from Minehead, Somerset, to Poole in Dorset. Yet due to problems with landowners, lack of paths and coastal erosion, those out for a walk can be forced to leave the sea behind in sections.

Walkers can enjoy the middle two-and-a-half miles thanks to Sir Geoffrey Newman, who allowed the trail to be re-routed along his estate's dramatic coastline.

But the coast on either side remains off-limits, belonging to 11 separate landowners, among them farmers and those whose houses back onto the coast. In these sections walkers take a detour that includes a busy A road with no pavement.

A five-mile stretch of beautiful beaches and sheer cliffs, walkers can experience them for only the middle two and a half miles.
This pleasure was made possible by the landowner, Sir Geoffrey Newman, who allowed the trail to be re-routed along his estate's dramatic coastline.
But the coast above and below remains out of bounds.
When the new path opened in 2005, Sir Geoffrey, said: "I am delighted that we have found a solution that meets the needs of walkers, wildlife and farming and merges so well into the landscape of this beautiful part of Devon."
The other two and a half miles of coast belongs to a number of landowners, including farmers and homeowners, whose houses back onto the coast.
Access
More than half of the detour is on tarmac, including rural sections of a busy A road with no pavement.

Ros Love, the South West Coast Path co-ordinator, said: "There is a huge demand for access along the coast here in the south west and sadly, this section is not as coastal as it could be."
She said the proposal for continuous coastal access may help to open up the few remaining non-coastal sections of the South West Coast Path. Around 7 per cent of it is deemed not to be in the best position.
"This section is one of our top priorities and anything that helps us achieve a complete coastal route is extremely helpful ," said Ms Love.
