Three quarters of consumers believe the government's proposals for water charges are unfair, according to new Consumer Council research.

It indicates that 80% think any charges should be based on the amount of water someone uses.

The IPSOS Mori research, who interviewed over 1,000 people, also found 92% opposed privatisation.

There is general agreement over special allowances for older people and low income families.

The Regional Development Department has launched an independent review of water charges due to report back in the autumn.

The department headed by Conor Murphy has ruled out any privatisation of the Water Service.
