Shoppers in Essex were forced to flee after an elderly woman drove through a pedestrianised shopping precinct.

The 82-year-old woman lost control of a green Vauxhall Corsa in Tesco car park, at the Grove shopping centre, Witham.

The car went down a narrow walkway, hitting a woman, a pillar and patio furniture before hitting a cafe wall.

A 20-year-old woman suffered leg injuries, a man was hit by flying brickwork and a cafe owner was treated for shock following the incident.

The driver was cut free from her car by firefighters and treated for minor neck and hip injuries.

A structural engineer was called to assess the damage to the site.

Essex Police appealed for anyone who saw the Corsa in the car park before the collision to contact officers.
