Unemployment is down - by 45,000 in the three months to March. UK unemployment is down - by 51,000 in the three months to April.
The total number of jobless fell to 2.63 million, according to the Office for National Statistics, its lowest level since last summer. That brought the unemployment rate in the first quarter of 2012 down to 8.2%, from 8.4% in the last three months of 2011. The ONS said the more timely claimant count, which measures the number of people receiving jobseekers' allowance, had also fallen, by 13,700 in April, to 1.59 million. The figures confirmed the loss of public sector jobs: 270,000 cut in 2011. Heather Stewart wrote last month that: The number of people employed in the public sector fell to 5.9m, the lowest figure since March 2003. A decrease of 39,000 people employed in the public sector and a rise of 205,000 people employed in the private sector were also recorded in the release.
In total, 270,000 public sector jobs were lost in 2011, reducing the total workforce to 5.94 million. The civil service payroll shrank by almost 7% over the year, while 71,000 roles disappeared in education, and 31,000 in the National Health Service
