Tokyo spa blast injures several One dead in Tokyo spa explosion
(30 minutes later)
Several people have been injured in an explosion at a bath house in central Tokyo, reports say. At least one person has died and four people are injured after a boiler exploded at a popular women-only bathhouse in central Tokyo, police say.
At least one person is missing and is believed to have been buried in the rubble of the building, fire officials were quoted as saying. Rescue teams were searching through the rubble amid fears that more people may be trapped beneath.
Police said the blast, at the popular women's spa, had been caused by a problem with the boiler. Police said the blast was caused by a problem with the boiler in an annex to the spa's main building.
The injured were taken to hospital by ambulance as rescue teams searched the debris for anyone else trapped. Television footage showed that only the metal frame of the annex building was still standing following the blast.
Debris had been blown into the streets, and neighbouring buildings were reported to have been damaged.
"When it exploded, the ground started shaking and it was amazing that I could keep standing," witness Masami Hanahara told Reuters news agency.
"Rubble flew everywhere. I saw two people under the rubble."
