Human rights campaigners have renewed calls for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi on the Burmese opposition leader's 62nd birthday.

In India Burmese nationals living in exile staged a protest on her behalf.

Ms Suu Kyi has spent 11 of the last 18 years under house arrest. In 1990 her National League for Democracy won polls that were annulled by the army.

Her latest period of detention, which began in May 2003, was extended by another year in May of this year.

At the Rangoon headquarters of Ms Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party( NLD) children lit candles on a birthday cake for the detained leader.

In November 2006, Ms Suu Kyi was allowed to leave her house to meet UN envoy Ibrahim Gambari for one hour.

She has never been allowed to take power.

Over the years Ms Suu Kyi has become an international symbol of heroic and peaceful resistance in the face of oppression.

In 1991 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to bring democracy to Burma.
