Soldier accused of giving secrets

Iranian-born Corporal Daniel James, 44, of Cliff Road, Brighton, faces a charge under the Official Secrets Act. Mr James is accused of communicating information that may be "directly or indirectly useful to the enemy" - widely believed to be Iran. He appeared via videolink before Mr Justice Calvert-Smith for a brief preliminary hearing on Friday. Mr James, who speaks Farsi and Dari, worked as a translator for Gen David Richards, who was the British commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan. He is alleged to have committed the offence on 2 November last year. A plea and case management hearing is due to take place on 13 July. |
