A man arrested on suspicion of murdering five women in Suffolk has spoken of his relief after being told he would face no charges.

Tom Stephens, 38, was arrested at his home in Trimley St Martin, near Felixstowe, on 18 December 2006.

It followed the discovery of the bodies of Gemma Adams, Annette Nicholls, Tania Nicol, Anneli Alderton and Paula Clennell in the Ipswich area.

Steve Wright, 49, from Ipswich, is accused of murdering the five women.

The part I found impossible to bear was that it was the names of my friends he was reading Tom Stephens

Mr Stephens was told last week he would face no further legal action.

Speaking to the Press Association, he said: "I've lost five friends in the past year who were not old enough to die."

He added: "I wish I'd been there for them. I do feel the most terrible pain about their loss.

"I remember the police officer arresting me and going through the names of the five women I was accused of murdering.

"The part I found impossible to bear was that it was the names of my friends he was reading."

Mr Stephens, who worked as a supermarket trolley collector was suspended from his job on full pay but said he was unsure if he would be able to return to work.

"I don't know whether I will be able to go back to my job and that is putting more pressure on me."
