A 33-year-old man has drowned after diving into a loch at the Strathclyde Country Park in Lanarkshire.

Alexander Sinclair, from Clackmannanshire, failed to resurface after plunging into the water while enjoying the warm weather.

The emergency services were contacted and Mr Sinclair was taken to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Strathclyde Police said they were not treating the death as suspicious

It is believed Mr Sinclair was dragged unconscious from the water by other members of his party after he dived into the loch at about 1430 BST on Saturday, one of the hottest days of the year so far.

Paramedics who arrived tried to resuscitate him before he was placed in the air ambulance.

A police spokeswoman said: "A post mortem will take place in due course to establish the exact cause of death although there would appear to be no suspicious circumstances at this time."

She said a report into the death of Mr Sinclair would be sent to the procurator fiscal.

The North Lanarkshire Council-run park is one the area's most popular leisure areas, and attracts thousands of visitors.

The artificial loch it is centred around offers pedalo, canoe and boat rides.

Kenneth Wilson, head of land services at North Lanarkshire Council, said the incident appeared to be a tragic accident and warned park visitors not to use the loch for swimming.

He said: "North Lanarkshire Council has safety notices in place around the loch.

"They are checked regularly and are all in place and in good order.

"We must stress that no one should go swimming in the loch as this case so tragically highlights.
