Animal rights activists have claimed responsibility for a major arson attack on a cattle farm, police have said.

In a message posted on the internet, the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) said it caused the damage put at £500,000 at Field Farm in Appleton, Oxfordshire.

David Morgan, boss of the farm, which employs 70 people, said fumes from the fire on 6 May killed some animals. Two tractors and containers were destroyed.

He added that he would not be intimidated by the arson attack.

Incendiary devices

"We have farmed in a traditional manner for over 50 years. We are proud of what we do and we will continue to do it," he said.

In the statement about the fire near Abingdon, the ALF said: "We placed several incendiary devices at the site, causing about £500,000 damage.

"We will continue to take action against businesses like this until they stop abusing animals."

Thames Valley Police said they were treating the claim as "a significant line of inquiry which will be investigated fully".

They have appealed for any witnesses to the arson attack in Netherton Road to come forward.
