(about 8 hours later)
A man held after a two-year-old girl was found with serious head injuries has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act, police said. A businessman has been sectioned after his two-year-old daughter was found at his family home with life-threatening head injuries.
The child was found at an address in Albert Embankment, central London, on Sunday at 0830 BST. Alberto Izaga an executive of insurance firm Swiss Re, was arrested when the girl was found at his flat in central London's Albert Embankment on Sunday.
She was taken to St Thomas' Hospital in Westminster where her condition is described as life-threatening. Scotland Yard said Mr Izaga, 36, who was in custody, has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.
Officers from Specialist Crime Division Five, the child abuse investigation team, are investigating. A police spokesman said the girl's condition remained critical.
The man, aged 36, was arrested at the flat and taken into police custody before being sectioned. Detectives from the Metropolitan Police's child abuse investigation team are probing the incident.
Forensic examination
Mr Izaga was arrested shortly after 0830 BST.
The girl, who has not been named, was taken to nearby St Thomas's Hospital where her condition is described as life-threatening.
The apartment is being examined by forensic experts and has been cordoned off.
Our thoughts are with the family Swiss Re statement
Mr Izaga is a member of the board of Swiss Re, one of the world's most powerful insurance firms.
He is described as the company's head of Life and Health Products. In July last year he was elected to the board of industry body the Association of British Insurers.
A company spokesman said: "Swiss Re is deeply saddened by the tragedy involving the family of Alberto Izaga. Our thoughts are with the family."
Mr Izaga, who is married with one daughter, works in London's landmark "Gherkin" building.
He began his career at the headquarters of General Electric in 1998, where he became vice president of business development.
