Hollywood star Paul Newman is donating $10m (£5m) to start a scholarship fund at the US college he attended.

The 82-year-old, who recently announced his retirement from acting, graduated from Kenyon College in 1949 with a degree in drama and economics.

The actor's donation will find up to 20 students per year, who will be known as Newman's Own scholars.

The nine-time Oscar nominee has donated more than $175m (£88.3m) to charity through food products bearing his name.

'Happiest days'

Newman, whose film credits include Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, has made private donations to the college in the past along with Joanne Woodward, his wife since 1958.

The couple went public at the college's request to attract other alumni benefactors, said college spokesman Shawn Presley.

Newman called his days at the Ohio college "among the happiest and most formative of my life".

""I believe strongly that we should be doing whatever we can to make all higher education opportunities available to deserving students.

"I hope others will support Kenyon in this manner," he added.
