Madeleine parents retaining hope Madeleine parents need 'one call'
(about 11 hours later)
The parents of Madeleine McCann are vowing to stay in Portugal unless there is "absolutely no hope" of finding their missing daughter. The parents of missing Madeleine McCann have said it could take "just one phone call" for the four-year-old to be found and returned to them.
The four-year-old disappeared from the family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in the Algarve exactly a month ago. In a statement to mark a calendar month since Madeleine disappeared in Portugal, Gerry and Kate McCann said they believed she was still alive.
Gerry and Kate McCann said they had no option but to believe she was alive. At an emotional service in Praia da Luz, the Algarve town where Madeleine was abducted, Mrs McCann broke down.
They are hoping JK Rowling might agree to include bookmarks featuring Madeleine's picture in her new Harry Potter novel, due out in July. She cried after a young Portuguese girl kissed her during the service.
Indirect approaches have been made to the author, who was among those to contribute to a £2.5m reward offered for information leading to the safe return of Madeleine. Madeleine disappeared from the family's holiday apartment while her parents were at a nearby restaurant.
"JK Rowling's public support and offers of help were prompted completely by her," Mr McCann said. We do realise it is just a phone call that we need. We just want her home Mr and Mrs McCann
The McCanns, who have also been publicising the case in other countries, are due to make appeals in Germany, the Netherlands and Morocco. The statement released by Mr and Mrs McCann, both 38, from Rothley, Leicestershire, read: "It is incredibly difficult not having Madeleine here.
Madeleine day "As every day, every week, becomes a month, we still believe she is out there and alive and we remain positive and determined that we will find her soon with everyone's help.
Mr McCann said there is still much to do before they can consider returning to their home to Rothley, Leicestershire. "We do realise it is just a phone call that we need. We just want her home."
"We would like to be here, obviously this is where she was abducted from, the investigation is centred around here and we certainly want to be close to that," he said. The couple, who are devout Catholics, are spending Sunday with their two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie.
Madeleine has now been missing for a month Pope meeting
"You might even argue that the hope is diminishing as time goes on but the investigation is still active and we will not give up until there is absolutely no hope." They left their apartment to join the congregation at the nearby Igreja Nossa Senora da Luz church, where they have prayed since Madeleine disappeared.
He said the couple, who were eating at a restaurant a short distance from their apartment at the time Madeleine was taken, refused to blame each other for her disappearance. Mrs McCann cried after being kissed when the congregation was asked to exchange a sign of peace.
"Of course we feel guilty, we feel that we've let her down, we were not there at that moment she was abducted," he said. Holding Madeleine's favourite toy Cuddle Cat and a copy of the best-selling children's book We're Going on a Bear Hunt, Mrs McCann struggled to compose herself.
The couple are, however, wary the publicity surrounding the disappearance could fade and say they may involving sport or music stars in a future Madeleine Day. As they went forward to take communion, Mr McCann put his arm around his wife and squeezed her shoulder.
"I think it would be later this year, once the media attention has dropped down to bring it back up hopefully for a short period to remind people," Mr McCann said. Jazz concert
Earlier this week the McCanns flew to Rome to meet the Pope at a general audience where he blessed a photograph of Madeleine.
Two weeks ago they visited Portugal's most holy shrine in Fatima and have spoken of how the support they have received from the local Catholic community has helped them.
A jazz concert of solidarity is being arranged to publicise Madeleine's disappearance in neighbouring Lagos on Thursday, which the McCanns hope to attend.
They are currently carrying out a series of visits to Europe, appealing for help and information about their daughter.
They have visited Rome and Madrid and next week they are planning to go to Berlin and Amsterdam.
The McCanns are targeting countries where Portugal is popular as a tourist destination.
