A paedophile who fled to North America before his trial has been extradited back to the UK.

George Galloway, 43, of Pinero Grove, Hartlepool, flew into Heathrow airport on Friday morning escorted by Canadian police officers.

The cable layer, who escaped two days before his trial, was found guilty in his absence in May last year of raping a 10-year-old girl.

He will now be sentenced at Teesside Crown Court on 11 June.

Canadian Mounties

Galloway, who was also found guilty of four counts of indecent assault, sparked an international manhunt.

All police forces throughout North America were alerted after Interpol tracked his movements to New York and then into Canada.

Canadian Mounties, together with other law enforcement agencies, were called to an address in the small town of Pefferlaw, Ontario, on 12 April, where he was arrested for immigration violation.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said he had been remanded in custody at Isleworth Crown Court in London.
