Firefighters said initial reports are that the aircraft was a glider which was severely damaged on impact. A spokesman for Cardiff International Airport said the light aircraft which crashed was a Europa type, flying from Bodmin to a small air strip at Whitson village, a few miles south west of Magor.
Three helicopters are currently at the scene and officers are awaiting a specialist police search team. The air traffic control at the airport did get routine calls from the plane, but no Mayday emergency call.
