Policeman killed in Kashmir fight
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/1/hi/world/south_asia/6706795.stm Version 0 of 1. Police in Indian-controlled Kashmir say a senior police officer has been killed in fighting with separatist militants. Deputy superintendent of police Shailey Singh was killed when the militants fired on police raiding their hideout in the mountainous Doda district. Police said the army had been called in to assist in the ongoing raid. More than 60,000 people have been killed in Kashmir since 1989 when an armed separatist insurgency began against the Indian rule. No militant group has yet claimed responsibility for the incident. The police said Mr Singh was leading a contingent that raided the hideout of militants in the Udrana area in Doda district when the militants killed him. Mr Singh's father, a police inspector, was also killed during fighting with militants in the Jammu area a few years ago. Violence decreased in Indian-administered Kashmir after India and Pakistan began peace moves in 2004. India accuses Pakistan of recruiting and arming the militants, a charge Pakistan denies. The two countries have twice gone to war over the divided region of Kashmir. |
